100 word challenge winners

Congratulations to Kelly and Korede (and a bit of help from Karen) for winning a 100 word challenge, beating over 600 entries from other schools. Their winning entry will be filmed and released on the Internet. Please enjoy their story.

Claws of a lion, eyes of a fly. The ginger huge body hunting its prey. It will eat huge chunks of meat and rotten bananas smothered together in a sandwich,with his sharp mighty teeth. Yuck what a sight. Its gold tail made it self stand out so bright that he deflected the light of the burning sun. His shadow like a giant storm cloud. Its head was held high; standing in front of him you could only see his chin. Eyes of flaming fire made him feel like he was a god. Body as furious as an impassioned lion.

Glogster

Photography competition

Children from Year 5 have written a report to be published in a book to be sent to schools in Bexley.  We were asked by the publisher for a photograph for the cover. We researched photograph tips and then took some fantastic pictures. We selected the best ones to send off, some examples are shown below.

Our friends in Denmark

We had a videoconference with our friends in Denmark. We have worked with the school for four years now, so it was like talking with old friends. Children discussed the Olympics and their favourite sports. The children in Denmark were very interested in following: 100 metre runner Usain Bolt; the tennis player Caroline Wozniacki; their Olympic swimmers and their very good handball team.
As before, their English was absolutely fantastic and they chatted away happily with our children.
We look forward to speaking to them again soon.

BAB competition

We had great fun making entries for a “Stop littering ” competition held by the BAB. The example above was made by Julita, Temilope and Kelly using Glogster.

Easter homework

We have set no homework for Easter, but have suggestions of work you might choose to do. We will, as always, reward those who put in that extra effort. You could:

  • Use SumDog to practise your mental maths;
  • ixl or Manga High for maths;
  • Make a glog or presentation about a famous scientist or science (one of our topics for next term is famous people);
  • 100 word challenge 100wc.net;
  • practice your times tables;
  • read, read, read – it’s fantastic;
  • make a Scratch project;
  • teach something to a younger brother or sister;
  • storybird;

Enjoy your holiday; you have earned it.

Greek Myths

It has been great fun researching and acting out our Greek Myths. In gruops of four, children performed their play. It was good fun!

Letters from Siberia

We received some fantastic letters from our new friends in Siberia. After Easter, we will be Skyping with them to share our ideas and thoughts about the Olympics. We have been in touch and Skyping with their teacher for three years.

Digital Leaders

On Friday nine children from Year 6 joined us while the rest of their class went swimming. That week in Literacy, Year 6 had been creating a dream playground, so we gave them an opportunity to try doing this in Google Sketchup. As they had not used Google Sketchup before, we asked Daniel and Kelly to support them. Year 6 found the program difficult to use but made great use of our Digital leaders.

PE

playing Handball at the BBA

The children really look forward to their Monday afternoon PE sessions at the BBA (our local secondary school). The staff are really fun and kind and have coached many different sports.

Digital Leaders

In our filming work, it was clear that there are many ICT experts in Year 5. The challenge is to share that expertise with the rest of the school, particularly younger children. We are looking for Digital Leaders to help others in the school with ICT. Interested? Fantastic. Please submit your ideas and expeience using this Google Form.

Year 5 Oscars

Wow! Amazing video making today. We were given the opportunity to make three different types of films:
Adverts made using Flip cameras;
Animations using 2Simple;
Tutorials using Screen Recording software.
Please look at the two fantastic examples below.

Flipped classroom

We are experimenting with a flipped classroom. The children were told the numeracy objective and were given an opportunity to research, receive tuition and practice using online maths programs (Manga High and ixl). We then work together on the objective in class answering the children’s questions and moving their learning on. They get more of an opportunity to ask questions and share their learning, and I do less talking.

Classroom charter

Rights respecting schools classroom charter
The whole class worked together to make a classroom charter containing our rights and responsibilities. The rights and responsibilities were part of our work about Rights Respecting Schools. We hope that they will make our class an even better place to work.

Olympics 2012

We are making lots of learning resources about the London olympics. We are hoping that children from around the world will play and learn from our resources. we welcome your comments on the games.

Superstar scholarship

Congratulations to Kelly. We are so proud of her. On Friday she went to the London Mayors office to play the violin and to receive the above certificate. She has won a four year scholarship from the London Major.

Quadblogging

A big thank you to Broadus Wood School in USA for all of their fantastic comments on our blog.

Yesterday MrG went to a big computer show for teachers in London. He met MrG from Trevithick School, our quadblogging partner. They discussed lots of ideas and are making arrangements for the children to Skype next week.

Year 5 films

The films made as part of our “Future of the book project,” have now been edited by the filmaker and can be seen by clicking on the picture above. Our class will be leading research in this project, and we will be working closely with the developers to design the books of the future.

Google Time

One of the main tools we use for learning is Google docs. This is free software that we have used since September. Work children do is not saved in a computer but on the Internet so children can, and daily do, continue their school work at home. Children have used Google docs to collaborate on stories, spreadsheets, websites and so much more.
We have now started “Google time”. Employees at Google are given 20% of their time to follow and develop their own projects. We are giving this same opportunity in class. Children can choose their own learning projects to pursue.
It will be interesting to see what projects the children will produce over the next few months. Watch this space! The presentation below was made by Daniel during Google Time, and at home.
