How many triangles?

Uncategorized No Comments »

The last question in our maths test today was a “How many triangles challenge?” We discussed the method used was as important as the answer? We then moved onto how many squares are there on a chess board. Although 64 is generally the accepted answer, if you look more closer there are many more squares. So, how many squares are there on a chessboard?

Our topic in Numeracy for the next few days is shapes. We started off today trying to identify 3D shapes. We put the ideas into a matching game. Click on the link below to play.
3D shapes match
After this, we looked at 3D shapes and tried to draw a net for the shape. We did really well at this.
In Literacy we are spending a few days on punctuation, especially the use of commas.

Hola Barcelona

Uncategorized 1 Comment »

Today we talked to 15 year-old children from Barcelona. We sung a song; told a poem and showed them some of our Spanish games.
They enjoy the same sports and music as us. They told us that it is often very sunny and that they also have skiing in the Pyrenees.
The teacher and the children were fantastic at speaking English and were very cool.

History timeline

Uncategorized No Comments »

It become clear from our work on Romans that the children had very little idea of dates in history. So today we asked the question what dates the children knew in history. These were the first dates mentioned.

  1. Roman Empire 1857
  2. Tudors 1970
  3. World War 1980
  4. Queen Victoria 1950
  5. The Plague 1860

I felt very old being told I was born after the World War and after Tudor times.

We talked further about different dates in history, and fifteen children lined up in a big time line. We shall return to this again and again until the children get a good feel for dates.

We started Numeracy with the above challenge.  This was very difficult until one or two children asked if they could rotate the square. Molly, closely followed by Elizabeth, was the first to work it out. Then Joe claimed to have solved it using just two squares. He was right; we think he managed to do it in two.

Can you do it with just two or three boxes?

Then in numeracy, children used calculators to work out fractions of amounts i.e. 1/4 of £16.80:   2/3 of 4.5 kg

Good morning America

Uncategorized No Comments »

Children spent the morning writing their script for their videoconference.

At 2.00 p.m. (9.00 a.m. in Ohio) we went live to Ohio to speak to our new friends in Mrs Mohr’s class. The children enjoyed talking and ansering questions about school life; television programmes; sports etc.

Northwood children were certainly jealous that the Ohio children had no school uniform.

We talked about ideas for future conferences and hope to meet up again soon.

In the afternoon we looked at a new program on the Internet to help with our spellings. The games are great fun and help practice spelling and using the words. To get to the games, log onto Fronter and click on the link.

More snow

Uncategorized No Comments »

Lots of snow and ice around today and at 9.00 there were just three children in class. Sian asked what we would do if there were only three children. Plans were made to buy some ingredients and spend the day cooking.

As other children turned up we had to abandon that plan. Eventually we had eighteen children in. We had a philosophy session about Christmas where we discussed ” Why do people who do not believe in Jesus celebrate Christmas?” There were some fantastic discussions and ideas shared.

We looked on the Internet and researched snow sculptures, and then went outside and made our own. Groups made snowcastles, igloos and snow chairs. Colour was added using paint and orange /blackcurrant squash.

Due to the bad weather school closed at 1.00

IMG_0725[1]Instructions for the day: Have fun, share and smile.

Lots of snow, and seven people didn’t make it in.

Started the day by going out into the playground and playing in the snow. Tried throwing frisbees and then it was throwing snowballs at Mr Greenwood. Great fun?

Then went to the computer suite to play games and go on Fronter. Abbie was logged on from home which was great.  In the afternoon it was social games with twister, as usual, being very popular.

A big thank you from Mr Greenwood, Mrs Martin and Mrs Benfield for your Merry Christmas wishes, cards and pressies. We hope you have a fantastic Christmas, and don’t forget you can keep in touch on Fronter.
