The weather forecast is for heavy cloud and light rain. Please bring a light waterproof coat, if you have one. Don’t forget, children in Year 5 are allowed to bring water guns, pistols and bombs, but must follow the rules when using these. These must be empty when taking on the coach.
Fingers crossed for a great day and not too much rain.
Just a reminder for Monday, please bring your packed lunch in a plastic bag so this can all be thrown. School uniform must be worn, but you do not need to wear a jumper; everyone will be given a sticker with school details on. Our train to return is booked and we are due back at school before 3:00. If we miss the train or it is delayed you should get a message via parentmail so please check your phones.
There should be no need to put on sun cream as once we have walked to Abbey Wood, the rest of the journey is under cover.
Fingers crossed for a fantastic, educational, safe and fun day.
Congratulations to Kyonne and Temi on winning the Bexley Library Bus competition. They wrote wonderful alien stories as did all the children in the class.
Earlier in the year we practised golf, so this afternoon we set up a nine hole golf course. There were lots of fantastic strokes including some holes in one.
We have been learning about mena, median and mode; the words are very similar, so it is hard to remember what the words mean. This song helps us to remember the words.
This afternoon we were treated to an organ recital. They showed us and talked about their different instruments. They played classical music that we recognised such as: Chitty chitty bang bang, Titanic and harry Potter music.
For a couple of weeks the children have been practising their diski dances. The dance is a mixture of dance and football; dancers must imagine they are keeping control of a football.
Lots of sport this summer. Every Tuesday, there is now cricket which the children really enjoy. Swimming is continuing on Thursdays; those children who have not had an opportunity to take part will get a chance in Year 6. Some Year 5 children will get a chance to take part in the swimming gala.
With the hot weather, we will be having our P.E. sessions outside. We will make sure we are not outside for too long and give children a chance to have water. Also, not long until sports day.
Children were given the task of planning a school trip. Using computers, they identified suitable places, checked they were safe, educational, cheap and easy to get to. Children voted for the best ideas, so we are planning to go to the following places: Buckingham Palace and St James Park; Belvedere Splash Park; Natural History Museum; and the Science Museum. Letters will be sent out shortly.
Our Philosophy session today was watched by twenty teachers (including Mrs Greenwood). The John Lennon song, Imagine, was used to start the dicussion. The lyrics ask you to:
imagine there’s no countries;
imagine no possessions;
imagine no religion;
imagine no heaven;
Our guests were very impressed with;
the behaviour of the class;
how well they listened to each other;
their fantastic ideas and how they expressed these;
They bought the class some sweets to thank them for demonstrating their philosophy skills.
The General Election is tomorrow so we held our own elections in class. First, we watched the three leaders and studied how they talked. Most of the children voted for Gordon Brown as he is more experienced and said gave solutions to problems.
Children, in five groups, made up their own ideas of what they would do if elected. We then voted for the best presentation.
We have been learning about Buddhism for our topic work. In philosophy we discussed if all animals (including humans) are equal. Buddhists believe that when you die you are born again, sometimes as an animal, depending on how good you were during your life. A Buddhist may be born again as a cow so you can imagine why Buddhists are vegetarians.
This challenge was solved by Elizabeth, with a bit of help from Molly. in the above squares you need to place the numbers 1-9 so they add up to 999. Difficult but possible.
I have now spoken to twelve schools who are interested in taking part in our project. Click here to find out more. Could be very exciting. The picture above is of children in Japan holding our footballer.
In pairs, children selected a World Cup country; they researched the country and made a multiple choice game for the school web site.
The first of the games have been made so please try them out.
